Tasting notes:
Candy cane, cherries and maple syrup
In our DISCOVER pod, you’ll find the flavour of maple syrup from the Nicaraguan Matagalpa and El Salvador’s caramel. But uniquely, there is an essence of cherry flavoured candy cane embedded from the combination of El Salvador’s velvet brightness and Indiano’s hint of cherry. You might also find a touch of mint emanating from its spiciness!
You can buy them in packs of 10 or join our Coffee & Kin community and take out a monthly subscription.
Don’t forget that 1p from every capsule you buy is reinvested back into our coffee growing communities through the Coffee & Kin Foundation. We have two main goals – to get you drinking delicious tasting coffee at home and to do good in the world.
Three different coffees were used to produce this delightful coffee pod. If you would like to learn more about each individual coffee, please read on:
Nicaragua Matagalpa SHG
Coffee in Nicaragua supports over 45,000 families,
who run small “fincas” (farms) on the mountain sides of the Matagalpa region.
This high-altitude coffee is the product of a small community dedicated to the production of incredibly high quality coffee with an emphasis on self-sufficiency and ecological sustainability. The name comes from an age-old nickname. Local people refer to this particular mountainside as La Zona del Oro, or the “Zone of Gold”.
The estate’s coffee grows in rich, volcanic hillside soils beneath the shade of banana trees. Interspersed throughout the plantation are community garden plots growing cabbage, passion fruit, bananas and other produce for consumption by the workers and their families. This coffee’s tasting notes subtly reflect the ground’s fertility.
Cupping notes:
This coffee has a mild fruity brightness from its pleasant acidity, with undertones of maple syrup and a mild spicy after taste.
El Salvador SHG
El Salvador is one of the coffee world’s success stories. Government tax breaks for farmers and elimination of export duties for coffee producers have led to better rural roads and railways and allowed indigenous coffee farming communities integration into the national economy.
In El Salvador, coffee plantations are situated on steep mountain slopes and have fertile red soils created from ashes and volcanic lava. Combined with sustainable farm-management systems, farmers have learned to gain efficiencies, improve crop quality, and maintain the local wildlife habitat.
Our El Salvador choice is specified ‘SHG’. ‘Strictly
High Grown’ designates coffee grown at an altitude above 1,350 meters. Higher grown coffee with lower temperatures produces a slower maturing fruit and a denser bean, which creates a more desirable specialty cup. Its flavour profile makes it perfect for the finest blends.
Cupping notes:
With a medium body, the dominant flavours are caramel and chocolate. Its soft acidity delivers a velvety, slightly buttery sweetness of honey and fudge.
Indiano Arabica Plantation AA
Plantation AA coffee consists of large ripe beans originating from the best plantations of the region. Monsoon climate and especially fertile soil of the area favour the cultivation of this high-quality Arabica. Nestled in the Beranagodu hills in the Western Ghats of India, this coffee has been grown on the Bynemara Estate by the same family since 1870. It is a truly exceptional coffee that has a rich flavour, deep aroma and velvety taste. It is without doubt one of the best Arabica coffees in the whole of India, which is confirmed by the “AA” quality designation.
With a very low acidity, this Indian coffee also has a dominant nutty aroma along with a delicate sweetness. The combination of its body, and a long lasting spicy and slightly smoky sweet aftertaste, allows you to recharge your energy and wellbeing for the entire day. This rich dark coffee also comes with stories of the land and people who have cultivated it for over a century, which is what we love about the specialty coffee industry.
Cupping notes:
Dominant nutty aroma, low acidity, with a rich delicate cherry sweetness and medium to full body. A long lasting spicy, smoky, sweet aftertaste.
